Minecraft Dungeons II: the Sift, co-op and the game-name trap

A new dimension and familiar branding can blur two different games. Here is what the September announcements actually say.

As of 30 September 2026. “A new Minecraft dimension” sounds straightforward until you ask which game the headline means. The September announcements discuss Minecraft Dungeons II and the Java and Bedrock sandbox editions on different timelines. Keeping those names separate is the first useful step.

The Sift has two timelines

In the September Minecraft Live recap, Sofia Dankis describes the Sift as part of Dungeons II, whose stated launch date is 29 September 2026. The same recap announces the dimension for Minecraft Java & Bedrock Edition next year. In that dated announcement, that means 2027.

Those statements should not be compressed into “the Sift is now in every edition.” A shared name does not make an action-RPG release and a future sandbox update interchangeable. The sources establish the announcement, not a promise that a future plan cannot change.

What kind of adventure is being described?

The recap describes an interconnected world and the ability to jump, contrasting that structure with the first Dungeons game’s level-based missions. These are the publisher’s descriptions. We have not played the sequel, timed progression or tested how smoothly travel between areas works.

The official Dungeons II FAQ makes the broader distinction explicit: the original Minecraft is a resource-gathering and building sandbox; Dungeons II is an action RPG with a narrative. Decide which activity you want before comparing similarly named products.

Co-op is more than one arrangement

The FAQ lists local couch co-op, online cross-play and mixed co-op, where players sharing one console or PC join others online. If you are planning an evening together, write down the arrangement you actually need. “Multiplayer” alone does not answer whether everyone will use one screen or separate machines.

Check the platform and starting point

The current platform list names Windows, Steam, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. The FAQ also says you do not need to have played the first Dungeons. Neither fact establishes performance on your particular hardware or removes any account and online-service conditions. Check the relevant store and current support guidance before purchasing.

Cosmetics can cross the naming boundary too

The 29 September cosmetics guide says the Aurora Cape belongs in Minecraft, not Dungeons II, despite being associated with the sequel’s launch. Read the destination game alongside the reward name. This article does not promise eligibility or supply a tracking link.

Our practical checklist is game, feature, availability date, platform. Fill in all four before deciding what an announcement changes for you. For a separate Java-specific change, see our Vulkan explainer.
