Nintendo Minecoin wallets: what changes for Minecraft on 27 October

Existing Minecoins and new Nintendo purchases follow different rules. Here is how to read the announced wallet split without assuming your balance disappears.

As of 6 October 2026: Minecraft has announced a change for players who use its Marketplace on Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 alongside other devices. From 27 October 2026, where you obtain new Minecoins will matter more. This is an upcoming wallet change, not an update we have tested on an account.

For a player moving between devices, the important task is to separate an existing balance from later purchases. A combined number on one screen will not necessarily mean every coin in it can travel to the other device.

What is being separated

The official September announcement says that new Minecoins purchased within Minecraft on Nintendo systems from 27 October will be usable only there. New Minecoins purchased on other devices will not be usable in Nintendo’s Marketplace after the change.

That does not mean the coins already in an account are being deleted. Those have a different route:

Coin sourceWhat to expect
Owned before the changeMove to the Legacy Wallet; remain usable on the compatible platforms where they were supported before.
New purchase on Switch or Switch 2Enter the Nintendo Wallet; spend on Nintendo systems.
New purchase on another deviceCannot be spent in Nintendo’s Marketplace; check that device’s supported wallet rules.

Why the old balance still matters

The current Minecraft Help explanation says Legacy Wallet coins do not expire. On Nintendo, a purchase uses those coins before drawing on the new Nintendo Wallet. The displayed balance can include both.

Here is a hypothetical example, not an account test: imagine 800 coins carried into the Legacy Wallet and another 300 purchased on Nintendo afterward. A Nintendo total of 1,100 could include both sources. The combined total alone would be a poor guide to what remains available elsewhere; the later 300 are Nintendo-only.

This is why a missing match between two displayed totals should not immediately be read as lost currency. Check which wallet the coins came from and which platform is displaying them. If the account still does not match the documented rules, use Minecraft’s official support route rather than buying more coins to investigate.

Two checks before making a purchase

First, check the intended platform. Mojang warns that some new retail Minecoin cards may not work on Nintendo; read the supported systems on the packaging before buying or redeeming one. This is not a reason to assume every card is becoming incompatible, or to stockpile currency before the change.

Second, separate the wallet change from the game release. The Switch 2 launch announcement also names 27 October and mentions a digital upgrade path for existing Switch players, with further details to follow. That statement does not establish an upgrade price or entitlement for a particular account.

The useful takeaway is to check the coin source, destination platform and official conditions together. For a separate upcoming gameplay development, see Minecraft’s ice-cave preview and its test-status limits.
