GOG’s September preservation update: the game and the box are different layers
New box scans make a useful distinction visible: preserving packaging and keeping software compatible are separate jobs.

As of 30 September 2026. A game can survive as playable software while something familiar disappears from the shelf: its box. GOG’s September news puts those two kinds of preservation side by side. Read the update carefully and a third, separate layer appears—the temporary sale around the games.
What changed in the September wave?
The 8 September press release names Star Trek: 25th Anniversary and Armikrog as new Preservation Program entries. It distinguishes them from Descent, Hitman: Codename 47 and Myst, which it says were already maintained by the program. All five are included in the box-extras announcement.
A scan records a different part of the experience
GOG describes rotatable three-dimensional scans of physical packaging, downloadable after purchase. It also announces printable versions made with Big Box Collection. These extras preserve a view of packaging; they should not be described as a newly shipped original box or a remaster of the game.
The compatibility commitment is another layer
The release describes the Preservation Program as GOG improving classic games and committing to maintain compatibility. That is the company’s stated commitment. We have not tested these builds, examined the downloadable scans or checked every operating system. A packaging extra does not itself demonstrate that software runs on a reader’s computer.
A sale has its own clock
The 25 September Autumn Sale announcement separately features games in the preservation program. It gives the sale an end time of 7 October 2026 at 07:00 UTC. That offer window is not the date the historical games were created, nor a stated deadline for the compatibility commitment.
We have not copied promotional prices into this guide. If you are considering a purchase, check the exact edition, region and current product page. The announcement of an offer and your individual purchase terms are different pieces of information.
Read three labels before drawing one conclusion
Our checklist is build, extras, offer. What software version and supported system are listed? Which files accompany that edition? Which commercial terms apply now? If a page answers only one question, do not use it to fill in the other two.
This is reporting on current publisher announcements, not a sponsored recommendation. No approved affiliate link is present. For another compatibility distinction that matters before changing versions, see our Hades II cross-save guide.
